Dewalt Angle Brush

Whats wrong with the motor?
A small DeWalt angle grinder motor. Arcs very noisily and visibly when switched on (it was damaged when motor was overloaded). The brushes are still long, and the brush springs are still putting good pressure on the brushes. The contact area of the brushes are blackened however.
Is this the problem? Can the brushes be resurfaced? If not, is there anything else that could be the problem, or will replacing the brushes be sufficient?
take a pencil rubber eraser and rub the comm clean < the thing the brushes push onto> a few drops of light oil on the bearings
